Keywords: Vanellus vanellus, Karelia, Leningrad Oblast, spring migration, phenological dates of bird arrival.
The Northern Lapwings (Vanellus vanellus) in the Republic of Karelia and Leningrad Oblast, North-West Russia, usually appear in the end of March – beginning of April, but there have been individual years (as a rule, under the conditions of warm spring) when arrival of these birds were recorded earlier (Malchevsky, 1981; Malchevsky, Pukinsky, 1983; Sazonov, 2008; Zimin, 2014). Uncommonly early arrival of the Northern Lapwings to North-West Russia was registered in 2015. According to Dr. V.M. Khrabryi (interviews at http://www.spb.kp.ru/daily/26363/3244819/ and http://www.vppress.ru/stories/Pereletnye-ptitcy-vernulis-v-gorod-na-mesyatc-ranshe-obychnogo-29442), 4.03.2015 the Northern Lapwings appeared in Saint-Petersburg (59°47′N, 30°16′E). 10.03.2015 fourteen birds of this species were observed by I.I. Loginov (pers. comm.) in the fields of Alexala settlement, South-West Karelia (60°58'N; 32°47'E). The Northern Lapwings stayed there for the following weeks. 17.03.2015 we registered four individuals of this species in the fields revealed from the snow in the North-East of Leningrad oblast, near the border with Karelia (60°35'N; 33°13'E). 19.03.2015 one bird was observed by the Director of the State nature reserve «Kostmukshsky» S.V. Tarkhov (pers. comm.) on the ice of the Kamennoe Lake, West Karelia (64°31'N; 30°11'E).
